I’m not one of those who claim Breath of the Wild is a bad game because of weapon durability, but lord. Problems with climbing mechanics cause these occasional tantrums to make them angry. There’s nothing worse than eventually climbing on top of a monster and getting to an area where you can deal damage, only to be interrupted repeatedly as you get shaken until you run out of stamina and tumbled back to the ground. rags and have to keep an eye on your endurance meter all the time. Considering the amount of time you spend climbing in Praey for the Gods, these annoyances will eventually haunt you almost every step of the way through a benevolent five-hour short. Sometimes you’ll even fall off whatever you’re climbing while you still have stamina and plummet to death in pure rage. You’ll either get caught on random surfaces on the go and have to frantically tug your thumbs until you break free, or start climbing in the wrong direction for no apparent reason and struggle to win. Combined with the slow controls, there were many times when my death felt completely unfair and I had to reach out to the non-existent umpire for a slow-motion replay of that barbaric crime.Ĭlimbing the giant beasts was supposed to be Praey for the head of the gods, but since you’re moving so slowly and the controls for climbing are inconsistent, it’s sometimes more frustrating than fun. There are times when I’m just a few feet away from an oncoming attack and my character will fall to the ground like I’m a FIFA player trying to foul the giant attacking me. Basically, anytime one of the giants attacks, they create a shockwave in the immediate area that deals tons of damage, knocking you to the ground for what feels like forever and extremely cheap. As you can imagine, lag in a combat-focused game where you can be killed in one hit is a recipe for a lot of rage, and even as I’ve adapted to it, that still doesn’t stop frustrating you. In the end, my brain adjusted to the delay and it had less problems, but every time I put the controller down and pick it up again afterwards, I would have to retrain the whole thing myself. It seems like it takes about a second for your character to react to whatever you do, which gets me a lot of kills in the first place. The most severe of them all is the feeling of how unresponsive and messy everything is, from climbing to fighting. Where the comparison stops is in the extremely sloppy mechanics and questionable design choices. The inspiration taken from Shadow of the Colossus isn’t hard to spot: in Praey for the Gods, you’ll travel through a desolate open world, massive monsters that scale, and can be rather confused by the story. This giant murder adventure tries to capture the magic of the classic PlayStation Shadow of the Statue, but misses the mark with sloppy controls, sloppy deaths, and bugs that manage to squander some otherwise solid boss encounters. However, there are also few experiences that are more disappointing than when that premise appears surprisingly short as it has been in Praey for the Gods. There is no game base more appealing than slaying mass of giant monsters by climbing on them like moving mountains to deal a fatal blow from above.
